The Stedelijk Museum or Amsterdam City Museum opened in 1895 as a museum for the history of the capital of the Netherlands. It presents a unique and one of the largest collections of all areas of contemporary art.

The building, built in the neo-Renaissance style, originally displayed furniture, coins, silverware, ornaments and living furnishings from old Amsterdam houses, a collection of weapons and an exhibition of an old pharmacy.

Currently, the museum exhibits works of classical modernism (Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall), the Art group "Style" (Pete Mandrian, Theo van Doosburg, Ger Rietveld) and CoBrA , Kazimir Malevich, German Expressionists, American Pop Art, Video Art (Nam June Pike, Bruce Nauman), Arte Povera and other contemporary artists.
